The Benefits of Spinal Alignment

in Southfield, MI

Did you know that spinal alignment is a major player in maintaining how you feel – both physically and mentally? This is why Pilates focuses on proper alignment of the spine at all times.

In fact, Pilates has a name for the natural curvature of the spine that occurs when lying down or standing. It’s called neutral spine and maintaining it helps distribute forces evenly and reduce the risk of strain or injury to the spine.

Neutral spine is where the the three curves (cervical, thoracic, and lumbar) are present and balanced. It’s when the back is neither flat nor overly arched. Being aligned with its natural curves allows for optimal muscle engagement throughout the body. And this is just one of the benefits of spinal alignment.

The (Oh-So-Many) Benefits of Spinal Alignment

If you’re shaking your head and thinking you don’t have spine misalignment, you’re probably assuming we’re talking about extreme conditions like scoliosis, kyphosis, and lordosis. These are typically easy to see as they present as curved or swaybacks, or very uneven shoulders.

But spine misalignment for most of us is less obvious and far more insidious. As such, there are some compelling reasons why keeping your spine in alignment is important. They are as follows:

1. Prevents Neck and Back Pain

If you’ve ever struggled with a stiff neck or persistent back pain (and who hasn’t!?), it could be caused by spinal misalignment. When we sit for many hours in a slouched position with our necks jutted forward, the spine can become misaligned. But by regularly stretching, strengthening, and aligning your body through a practice like Pilates, you can avoid these everyday aches and carry yourself with more ease.

2. Improves Posture

All of those adults who told you to sit up straight when you were a kid were on to something. While they may have just wanted you to look poised and well-behaved, by consciously sitting up straight you distribute your body weight more evenly. This, in turn, reduces stress on your muscles and ligaments. The more you practice good posture, the easier and more natural it feels.

3. Supports Other Body Systems

Consider this. The spine is the central highway of the body. When it’s out of alignment, it impacts the various “exits” along the route. For example, its connection with the digestive organs is clear when you sit up straight versus slouch in a chair and compress them. Furthermore, the lungs which are protected by the ribs that extend from the spine have more space to expand and assist in healthy breathing when the spine is properly aligned.

4. Promotes Healthy Nerve Function

Beyond all of those important joints and muscles, the spine also houses a network of nerves. These transmit messages between your brain and body so you want to keep the spine aligned correctly to allow these signals to flow smoothly. When the signals get disrupted, it can throw off your focus, balance, and energy.

5. Enhances Mobility and Flexibility

When we’re young, many of us take mobility and flexibility for granted.  As we age, however, it becomes more difficult to perform what used to be simple tasks such as bending over to pick things up or even taking a slow walk. Practicing mindful movements in a low-intensity exercise system like Pilates allows you to maintain mobility while also strengthening the muscles that protect your spine. Over time, you’ll notice reduced stiffness and fewer restrictions in movement.
