The Magic of GYROKINESIS®

The Magic of GYROKINESIS®

You’ve probably had the experience of being cramped up in a car, or on a train or plane. And you know how great it feels when you’re able to finally stand and stretch every part of your body. Wouldn’t it be great if every fitness class could achieve this?

Unfortunately, if your days consist of long bouts of standing or sitting, your spine and pelvis are going to experience that same cramped and compressed feeling. And rather than open you up, some fitness methods actually exacerbate this.

That’s not the case with GYROKINESIS® though. In fact, it’s quite the opposite.

What Is GYROKINESIS®?

There are seven natural movements of the spine. It arches forward, rounds back, bends laterally to the right, bends laterally to the left, twists to the right, twists to the left, and moves in a circular motion.

GYROKINESIS® is an exercise method that focuses on these seven elements. It utilizes slow, fluid, rhythmic, and undulating movements coupled with calming breath work. It not only builds strength and brings mobility to the joints, but the movements feel as great as that post roadtrip stretch.

GYROKINESIS® was developed by Juliu Horvath as a means to regain strength and agility after a dance injury. It’s a part of the GYROTONIC EXPANSION SYSTEM®. But where GYROTONIC® uses specialized equipment to guide the movements and add resistance, GYROKINESIS® does not. The movements are guided by the same principles, but are practiced on a stool, mat, or standing.

The exercises also stimulate internal organs, fluids, glands, and muscles while the breath work activates the nervous system to oxygenate the blood and clear energy pathways. It really is its own sort of magic.

What to Expect in a GYROKINESIS® Class

At the beginning of a GYROKINESIS® class, you will learn simple breathing patterns that awaken your senses and provide you with a deeper connection with your body. You’ll also practice self-massage.

After that, you’ll move through a series of arching, rounding, twisting, bending, and circular movements while sitting on a stool. The movements will slowly and mindfully become more expansive to include the hip, knee, hamstring, quadriceps, and other targeted body areas. From there, further movements are explored from lying and standing positions.

This format is the same across the entire spectrum from beginner to advanced practitioner. And while the movements are highly technical and exacting, participants always have guidance from experienced instructors who ensure you’re safely and continuously moving.

What’s more, while performing these smooth and fluid movements that are intuitive for the spine, there is absolutely no impact on the joints.

Benefits of GYROKINESIS® Exercise

The postures in GYROKINESIS® are connected with breath and not held for long amounts of time. It may sound like yoga, but it actually feels more like dancing or swimming.

And there are a wealth of benefits:

  • Builds strength
  • Decompresses joints to minimize discomfort
  • Increases circulation of blood and lymphatic fluids
  • Transfers energy and force evenly through the body to increase flexibility, coordination, and balance
  • Decreases risk of injury by enhancing joint mobility and articulation
  • Strengthens the nervous system through breath work
  • Improves posture
  • Helps to prevent osteoporosis and slow the aging process

So it’s clear that having all of the systems of the body stimulated and connected by movement enables GYROKINESIS® to benefit every aspect of health.
