Having Trouble Finding a Workout Partner?

It’s well known that having someone else to workout with will keep you motivated.

When you have a workout buddy, you’re not only accountable to them but they’re accountable to you. So you need to show up.

But what if you’re having trouble finding a workout partner? You’re not alone.

Tips for Finding a Workout Partner

If nobody immediately pops to mind when you think “workout buddy,” it’s okay. It’s possible that you have a lot of friends who are couch potatoes and no matter how much convincing you attempt, it just won’t happen.

But even if your bestie doesn’t live right up the street or enjoy the workouts you do, all is not lost. We have some tips for landing a workout partner that you may not have considered.

1. Head to the Internet

Although it may not be the solution for everything, the internet can help you find folks who enjoy doing the activities that you do. Whether it’s long hikes in the woods, lifting weights, challenging bike rides, Zumba, yoga or Pilates classes, or all of the above, a website like ExerciseFriends.com can hook you up.

It should be noted that some of these sites include ‘dating’ as part of the exercise deal, so be sure you know what you’re getting into.

2. What About Your Partner?

It goes without saying that many of us are unattached. If that’s you, go ahead and skip to number three. Or if your significant other has already made it clear that they’re not exercising even under the penalty of death, you can also skip this one.

On the other hand, if you and your partner both enjoy exercise – even if it’s two different types of exercise – you may have a workout buddy right under your nose. Maybe you decide you’re both going to try something new. You could even just do a couple 30-minute YouTube classes together in your home twice per week at an agreed upon time.

You may find this doesn’t work so well and that’s okay. But for couples who find success in working out together, they gain an additional layer of intimacy and connection. So it’s a win-win.

3. Connect with Others in the Gym or Studio

If you have a gym membership, you’ve probably noticed a handful of people numerous times. Chances are that they have a similar schedule to yours. Same goes for taking classes at a yoga, spinning, martial arts, or Pilates studio.

Why not approach one of those people and spark up a conversation about why they’re there and what they enjoy about that particular workout. It’s the perfect way to find a workout buddy who already shares your interests and is available when you are.

4. Make Your Buddy the Four-Legged Variety

There’s no rule that says you have to work out with a human. If you have a dog, or you have a friend who has a dog, establishing a regular walking regimen with that dog will go the distance in boosting fitness levels for both of you.

Part of what makes a dog such an amazing workout buddy is how absolutely grateful he or she is to walk with you. You’ll always get to pick the route and there will never be a boring conversation. It’s a great way to get a new workout pal and easily add 3-5 30-minute walking sessions to your week.

5. Don’t Let Geography Limit You

If your closest friends are scattered all over the country, that doesn’t rule them out from being workout partners. You can all be accountable to one another by taking the same streaming classes together or through texting via Facebook during exercise. As long as even one person knows your goals and is able to check in with you (in whichever way you agree upon), it will boost the chances that you’ll continue to workout.

6. Go Virtual

One of the most asked questions in our common vernacular is, “Is there an app for that?” And in the case of helping you to find a workout pal, the answer is yes!

You can develop an entire network of workout pals with apps like Yog and Strava. You and other like-minded folks on the app upload your stats so you can compare with one another. This competitive component keeps you accountable and helps boost motivation.
